Soccer Body Types: Here's What You Need to Know!

Soccer players come in a variety of physical shapes and sizes. Goalkeepers, central defenders, and target man forwards are typically the tallest and heaviest players.

Shorter players are more likely to play in wide and attacking roles. There are, however, numerous exceptions in every position.

What are the body types of soccer players? Soccer players are cardio machines, with slim and lean bodies and muscular legs. Their average height is similar to that of the average person, and their weight rarely exceeds 200 pounds for men and 155 pounds for women.

This is due in large part to the physical demands and endurance requirements of being a professional player. In terms of soccer, playing the average game has no real meaning.

When it comes to a player's make-up, body types and physical characteristics are merely variables.

There are three different body types, according to scientific facts:

  • Ectomorphs
  • Mesomorphs
  • Endomorphs

Soccer players are classified as Ectomorphs or Mesomorphs, with Mesomorphs being the most common body type.

There are, however, numerous examples of endomorphs in the game.

Goalkeepers: Body Shapes

Goalkeepers are typically the tallest and heaviest players on the team. The tallest position in the 2018 World Cup was GK, with an average height of 6ft 2".
 
Lovre Kalinic, a 6ft 7" Croatian goalkeeper, was the tournament's tallest player. Simon Bloch Jorgensen, who stands 6ft 1012", is the world's tallest player at the moment.
  • At the 2018 World Cup, the average weight of a goalkeeper was 184 pounds, nearly 14 pounds heavier than the average player.
  • Goalkeepers are the tallest female players. The average female GK is slightly shorter than 5ft 10".
  • Goalkeepers' body types are predominantly mesomorphs and endomorphs.

Forwards

The sizes of attackers, like those of certain midfield positions, can vary greatly. Short and quick with low centers of gravity, advanced playmakers, center-forwards, and wingers are common.

They are light in order to dribble, pass, and move quickly in the opposing third, but have good core strength.

As pure natural athletes, these physically gifted players almost always fall into the mesomorph category. The following is perhaps the best example of this:

  • Gareth Bale (6ft 1”)

  • Ivan Perisic (6ft 1”)
  • Marcus Rashford (6ft)

Strikers

When it comes to body type, the number 9 or striker position can have the most variation. On one end of the spectrum, we've targeted men like Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who stand 6ft 3" and 6ft 5" and weigh more than 200lbs, respectively.

These powerhouses have the physical stats of a GK and a CB, as well as the skill and athleticism of an attacker.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have players like Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney. With their stocky physiques, both fall into the endomorphic category.

Neither is "typically" athletic, but they both have superior strength and balance, which complement their distinct skill sets and increase their effectiveness on the field.

Many more strikers fall somewhere in the middle of Zlatan and Aguero.

Female executives have a slightly lower BMI (22.4). Soccer is played by athletes of various body types, but they are all in peak physical condition.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this is how physically and stylistically different both players are, despite the fact that they play similar roles.

Ronaldo, at 6ft 2", 185lbs, is built like a Greek God, whereas Messi, at 5ft 7", 158lbs, could easily pass for your neighborhood barista.

In soccer, there is no such thing as an average body type. Some may argue that there is the best type for each position, but there are always exceptions (and lots of them).
