A Short History of Sports

 Sports have been around for at least 3000 years, according to historical records. Sports were often used to prepare for war, or train as hunters. This explains why early games included spearing and stake throwing, as well as rock sparring.


The Olympic Games, which included games such as foot and chariot racing, wrestling, jumping, and discus throwing, were brought to the globe by the Ancient Greeks. This is a list that depicts the history and origins of several of today's most popular sports.


Cricket 

Cricket was initially played in the 16th century in the south-east of England. It had already become the national sport by the 18th century and was gaining popularity worldwide in the 19th- and 20th centuries. It had a willow blade and a cane handle with rubber strips laid on top and knotted with twine for a grip. The longest cricket match ever recorded was played in 1939 and lasted nine days.

Baseball. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright (1820-1892), New York was the first to create the modern-day baseball field. 


Softball 

In 1887 George Hancock, a Chicago Board of Trade reporter, created softball as an indoor form of baseball. It was first played in the Farragut Boat Club's cold winter days.

Basketball


Players utilized a soccer ball to dribble up and down a court with unknown dimensions at first. Landing the ball in a peach basket could get you points. Open-ended nets were introduced ten years later. This eliminated the time-consuming operation of manually collecting the ball from the basket after a goal was scored. Converse All Stars were the first basketball shoes ever created. 


Rugby and American Football

Rugby: The origins of rugby can been traced back to a Roman game, Harpastum (from "seize"), which dates back more than 2000 years. This game was unlike soccer, in which the ball was moved by the player's feet. The modern game was first played in 1749 at a school in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. The school boasted "every accommodation possible for the exercise and enjoyment of young gentlemen." The eight acre site on which the game was developed was called "The Close." The rules of rugby were not very strict between 1749-1823. The ball was kicked and not carried forward.


Football 

American football comes from rugby and soccer. Although Rutgers and Princeton were able to play what was then called the first college football game, it wasn't until 1869 that the game took off. The rules of the game were created by Walter Camp, a Yale University player and coach. AAA player William (Pudge) Heffelfinger received a check for his efforts in the game against the Allegheny Athletic Association football club on November 12, 1892.

Golf



Golf 

There were other similar games that required you to swat a rock with your stick along a predetermined path in Europe, but the game we know today was invented in Scotland.


In the middle of the 15th century, the popularity of soccer and golf suffered a setback. As Scotland prepared to defend its borders from English invasion, the rise in popularity of golf and soccer was blamed for the fall in archery and swordsmanship. Scotland made soccer and golf illegal in 1457.




Hockey


Although ice hockey's origins are not known, it is likely that the game evolved from field hockey, a centuries-old game in Northern Europe. James Creighton, a Canadian, created the rules for modern ice hockey. The first game between two nine-player teams was played in Montreal (Canada 1875) at Victoria Skating Rink. It featured a flat circular piece made of wood as a prototype for the modern hockey puck. The current rules allow for six players per team, with the goalie as the netkeeper.


Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, established the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup (now the Stanley Cup) in 1892 to honor the best Canadian hockey team each year. In 1893, the Montreal Hockey Club received the first award. Later, the awards were opened to American and Canadian league teams.
